Dirty Dogz

Project Type

Illustrative Activist Campaign

Date

October 2023 - May 2024

Dirty Dogz is a site-specific exhibition highlighting the effects of sexual harassment in public spaces on female presenting people, designed to infiltrate pubs and clubs and draw awareness to disgusting behaviour. Through humorous imagery of satirical cartoon dogs, I invite the perpetrators to consider how unsafe they make us feel and challenge the 'it's just how it is', 'boys will be boys' attitude in society. The large scale wooden installations bring the problems to life and confronts them head on, no longer being able to be ignored, while the pamphlets help further explain the campaign. Beer mats scattered on sticky pub tables join them at their tables, refusing to tolerate it. I am showing men how their actions make them look like un-neutered, out-of-control dogs, hoping to impact their outlook on their behaviour. I strive to build awareness in these spaces and encourage others to spot and diffuse these complications quickly, ceasing to settle for ignorance.

This project won a Commendation prize for the NTU Changemaker's Competition, which is an achievement I am extremely proud of. The next steps are to set them up at certain bars and pubs in Nottingham and obtain responses from the public to make improvements and to help push the message into the world. These hard conversations are important to have and I am hoping I can successful generate change in a witty and playful way.
